Itinerary

  • Day 1: Cusco – Tinque – Apis – Arapa Pass – Yana Cocha.
    • Camp in Yana Cocha.
  • Day 2: Yanacocha – Puka Pass – Ananta – Warmisaya Pass – Kayrahuiri.
    • Camp in Kayrahuiri.
  • Day 3: Kayrahuiri – Rainbow Mountain – Llacto – Cusco.
    • Visit to Rainbow Mountain and return Cusco city.
  1. Day 1: Cusco - Tinque - Apis - Paso Arapa - Yana Cocha

    We leave Cusco at 04:30 am by private van driving 3 hours through the district of Urcos to the trailhead called Upis Pampa or Rodeana. Expect sensational views of the spectacular Mount Ausangate as we hike to Upis Huarmisaya where you’ll meet local farmers wearing their traditional clothing and see fields of llamas and alpacas. After a delicious lunch here made by the chef, we will continue to our camp called Yana Cocha. On our way, we will have a fulfilling experience crossing Arapa pass and many beautiful lakes.

    • Walking Distance: 12km/ 7,5 miles.
    • Hiking hours: 6 to 7 hours roughly.
    • Trailhead Elevation: 4,220 meters / 13,840 feet.
    • Difficulty: moderate.
    • Campsite Elevation: 4,600 meters / 15,100 feet.

  2. Day 2: Yanacocha – Paso Puka - Ananta - Paso Warmisaya - Kayrahuiri

    Wake up this morning with a prepared cup of coca tea at 5 am. Enjoy a delicious breakfast for the day ahead. This morning, we hike up to Puka or Red pass, which is at 5000 m (16500 feet). Here, we will have an amazing view of the colorful mountains and beautiful blues lakes. On our hike down, observe llamas and alpacas as well as the snow-capped Ausangate to your left. Your English-speaking native guide will explain the flora, fauna, and landscape along the trail. If we are lucky we might see condor, chinchillas, and vicuñas.

    After eating our lunch in Antapata, we will hike up to Warmisaya pass, where we will have more amazing views of Ausangate Mountain with lakes below. We then hike down to our campsite of Kayrahuiri where we will spend the night in our beautiful mountain tents. Our staff will set up everything beforehand so you can change and take a nap before having dinner prepared by our professional chef.

    • Hiking hours: 7 to 8 hours roughly.
    • Trailhead Elevation: 4,600 meters / 15.100 feet.

  3. Day 3: Kayrahuiri - Montaña de Colores - Llacto - Cusco

    Today is the day you have been waiting for. We will wake you up at 04:30 am with coca tea delivered to your tent before starting uphill until rainbow mountain at 5030 m (16.500 feet). From here, we are going to have the pleasure of being the first hikers right here on Rainbow Mountain to get epic photos and majestic views at sunrise. From here, we hike slightly down two where you can get the classic postcard photo. We continue walking to explore the famous and interesting red valley. We will have 360 views of the spectacular landscape which surrounds you. Soak in the vistas and enjoy as much as possible of this place.

    After enjoying Rainbow Mountain, and Red Valley, we will hike down for about 1.5 hours to Llacto where we say goodbye to our horseman and start the 3-hour drive back to drop you off at your hotel around 5 pm.

    • Hiking hour: 4 hours roughly.

    • Temperature: cold, windy, dusty.
    • Meals: breakfast, lunch.
