The Salkantay Trail to Machupicchu is an alternative to the well-known Inca Trail to Machupicchu, during the trek you will appreciate the snow-capped mountains of the Andes, picturesque lakes such as the Humantay Lagoon and the Salkantay Lake, cross through the Amazon jungle, which makes this hike as one of the most beautiful and interesting in all of Peru.

The 5-day trek from Salknatay to Machupicchu is included in the “National Geographics” list as one of the “25 best treks in the world”.

Salkantay Trek to Machupicchu 5 Days

The 5-day Salkantay to Machupicchu trek is an adventure tour that connects the snowy Salkantay with the Inca Citadel of Machupicchu, during the tour we will be able to observe spectacular landscapes with snow-capped peaks and the jungle of Cusco and the great biodiversity of its own flora and fauna from the area.

We will cross the Nevado Salkantay, the highest in the Vilcabamba mountain range, until we reach Llactapata, which is behind the Machupicchu mountain, to later arrive at Aguas Calientes.

Itinerary

  • Day 1: Cusco – Mollepata Soraypampa.
    • Camp in Soraypampa.
  • Day 2: Salkantay Pass – Huayracmachay – Chaullay.
    • Camp in Chaullay.
  • Day 3: Collpapampa – Sahuayaco – Lucmabamba.
    • Camp in Lucmabamba.
  • Day 4: Llactapata – Hydroelectric – Aguas Calientes.
    • Hotel in Aguas Calientes.
  • Day 5: Machupicchu – Cusco.
    • Visit to Machupicchu and return Cusco city.
  1. Day 1: Cusco - Mollepata - Soraypampa

    Early in the morning we will pick you up from your hotel at 5:00 am, and then we will go to Mollepata, where we will have our breakfast, and then take the transport for approximately 30 minutes to Marcoqasa, where our walk will begin.

    The walk will last 5 hours, during this journey we will be able to enjoy the snowy Humantay and we will be walking on the mountains of the Andes, until we reach the Soraypampa camp where we will have our lunch, after a short rest we will continue the walk for an hour and half until we reach a beautiful turquoise lagoon, located on the slopes of the Humantay mountain, then we will return to Soraypampa, where we will have our dinner and spend the night in our camp.

  2. Day 2: Salkantay Pass - Huayracmachay - Chaullay

    After having an energetic breakfast we will prepare to start our trek, on this day we will reach the highest point of our entire journey, we will ascend from our Soraypampa camp to the Salkantay Pass (4,600 masl), during this journey we will be able to see different lagoons and appreciate the change of ecological floors from the Quechua zone to the puna zone, and being able to enjoy the Apu Salkantay and the guide’s explanation.

    We will begin the descent to the town of Huayracmachay where we will have our lunch, after a well-deserved rest we will continue the descent to the town of Chaullay, where we will spend the night in our camp, in this last part we will be able to enjoy the change in flora and fauna, appreciate different types of birds and the different varieties of orchids until you reach our camp.

  3. Day 3: Collpapampa - Sahuayaco - Lucmabamba

    During this day we will see the great diversity in the flora and fauna of the area, after having had our breakfast we will start our walk, we will pass through the community of Collpapampa, during the tour we will appreciate the great variety of orchids and great waterfalls, we will also feel the climate change because we will enter the high jungle until we reach Lucmabamba where our lunch will take place.

    In the afternoon we will have time to enjoy the customs and traditions of the people of the area, we will have the opportunity to observe how the coffee is produced from the plantation, through processing and the final product, as well as to be able to enjoy an authentic Peruvian coffee sample.

  4. Day 4: Llactapata - Hydroelectric - Aguas Calientes

    We will start the walk early for about 3 hours, during this journey we will see the great variety of flowers and vegetation typical of the high jungle until we reach the archaeological zone of Llactapata, which is located just in front of Machupicchu, after a guided tour in these ruins we will go to the Hydroelectric where we will have our lunch, and then continue to the town of Machupicchu, where we will spend the night in the hotel.

  5. Day 5: Machupicchu - Cusco

    Early in the morning, after breakfast, we will take the bus up to the Inca Citadel of Machupicchu, where you will take a guided tour of various places such as the main square, the circular tower, the sundial, the royal quarters, the temple of the three windows, the quarries and more places for approximately 2 hours.

    Then you will have free time to walk through the Inca Citadel, take the corresponding photographs and enjoy this magical place, then we will take the bus down to Aguas Calientes, where we will take the return train to Ollantaytambo and from there the bus that will take us to the city of Cusco and back to your hotel.

      1. Day 1 Cusco - Mollepata - Soraypampa

        Early in the morning we will pick you up from your hotel at 5:00 am, and then we will go to Mollepata, where we will have our breakfast, and then take the transport for approximately 30 minutes to Marcoqasa, where our walk will begin.

        The walk will last 5 hours, during this journey we will be able to enjoy the snowy Humantay and we will be walking on the mountains of the Andes, until we reach the Soraypampa camp where we will have our lunch, after a short rest we will continue the walk for an hour and half until we reach a beautiful turquoise lagoon, located on the slopes of the Humantay mountain, then we will return to Soraypampa, where we will have our dinner and spend the night in our camp.

      2. Day 2 Salkantay Pass - Huayracmachay - Chaullay

        After having an energetic breakfast we will prepare to start our trek, on this day we will reach the highest point of our entire journey, we will ascend from our Soraypampa camp to the Salkantay Pass (4,600 masl), during this journey we will be able to see different lagoons and appreciate the change of ecological floors from the Quechua zone to the puna zone, and being able to enjoy the Apu Salkantay and the guide’s explanation.

        We will begin the descent to the town of Huayracmachay where we will have our lunch, after a well-deserved rest we will continue the descent to the town of Chaullay, where we will spend the night in our camp, in this last part we will be able to enjoy the change in flora and fauna, appreciate different types of birds and the different varieties of orchids until you reach our camp.
